The crowd is generally not judgemental and there to have a good time, not so much to impress people (in my opinion). I have met many really cool, nice people here and frequently run into friends. The Compound is the type of place that you can go to when you want to dance and drink while at the same time not spending very much money and not needing to dress up. It does have a seedy element to it, some of the patrons are kind of sleazy but, hey, its a dive bar on Broadway, keep an eye on your shit and get over it. Although it doesn’t get to terribly busy, the dancefloor is welcoming and the music, not bad. There was only one time I had to pay a cover but it was new year’s eve and it was only $ 5. The drinks are inexpensive and very strong, just the combination I prefer. I have been going to this place for the better part of the past decade and don’t plan on stopping any time soon. In a town where there already is very little good dance music (not you, Craig C!) it isn’t hard to do better - and the Compound fails. I keep wondering if they’ll let me just hook up my phone with Pandora to their system and fire the DJ. There’s so much good music out there, funky, imaginative, vocal stuff like the Hed Kandi, Hi-FI Mike, and Jimpster collections I can get online from Pandora that all get my friends dancing at my house, and the DJ there can’t even go there. The DJs can’t keep the beat going, they mix in queeny self-important dramatic breaks that everyone stands around waiting for them to finish, and all the songs sound the same. I go there every now and then with a friend who goes there because the dance floor is empty, and getting my body to move to the music there is like pulling teeth. I think it’s the unbearably bad music: nobody wants to dance. Nice space, great location, almost enough parking, good drinks, friendly staff, great dancefloor with night lighting and a good sound system But yet it fails. I never understand why this place can’t be all that it could be.
